The exact motive of the attack was unknown, while police suggested that the family could have been the target. Afghan ministry believe that the attack was initiated by the Taliban insurgents against the foreign troops stationed in Afghanistan.

From the rising trend of attacks launched by the Taliban against foreign troops, it could be seemed as an effort by the former to build up their strength against the additional US soldiers that are going to be deployed to Afghanistan.
