Rabies Outbreak in Peru

Posted by barb On August - 13 - 2010

Vampire Bat
Vampire Bat
Emergency personnel have been sent to a distant area in the Amazon region to fight an occurrence of rabies that is being spread by vampire bats.

500 people have been bit by the bats and 4 children have died.

The vampire bat typically feeds on blood from animals in the wild or livestock. They don’t normally attack humans. They suck blood from the animals while they sleep.

The rabies vaccine has been given to the people who would accept it. There are some that denied it.

It is possible that the reason for the sudden spurt in the vampire bats attacking humans could be due to the harvesting of trees in the Amazon.

The children in the area of Urakusa which is located in the north-eastern Peruvian Amazon are the ones who perished due to the disease. When the children died, and the community did not understand why, they asked for help.

That is when the health ministry sent out 3 medical groups to take care of and vaccinate the people who had received bites.

Over Crowed Ferry Flips Over on the Amazon River

Posted by barb On May - 27 - 2010

On Wednesday, a ferry on the Amazon River flipped over. According to riders that survived the accident, the ferry was horribly over crowed.

The amount of people the ship is suppose to carry is 160. At the time of the article being written, there were 171 people that had been rescued. Another 12 already found to have perished in the accident.

It is unknown how many people were actually on board the boat. The official record of who was to be on the boat at that time were 146 passengers and 6 crew.

It is possible there could be more people alive in a bubble of air entrapped in side the flipped boat.  There is hope for more survivors.

The boat had made many stops along the way at settlements where more people, freight and animals were put on the boat.

The  boat commenced it’s voyage on Tuesday evening. As it continued to stop and get more freight on board, it is believed that the boat was over weight and not stable. Therefore causing it to flip over.

Some survivors feel they only survived because they kept close to the railings as to not be trapped inside where there were people so squished in you couldn’t hardly move.

The coast guard got an alarm on Wednesday morning at 2:40am. The alarm was for a boat sinking because it was over loaded.

Rescue attempts continued Thursday morning in Peru searching in hope of more survivors.

Clahses between local police force and the indigenous in Peru
Clahses between local police force and the indigenous in Peru
The indigenous people have started a series of road blockades in an attempt to protest against foreign companies from exploiting their land for natural resources. The protest took place as early as two months ago, in April, after the government announced that an area of land would be granted for exploration of oil, mining, and etc.

The protest has been peaceful for the past months, but turned nasty after indigenous leader blamed police of opening fire on protestants recently. The protest eventually escalated into clashes, where both sides resolved to violence. As many as 22 protestants and nine policemen were killed.

Peruvian president commented that all Peruvians have a share to the country’s natural resources, and not only just those who happened to be residing in the area concerned. The military has already been authorised to support local police force if situation continues to escalate.
