Apparently heavy rains have weakened the under lying area of rock beneath the ground. It allowed the ground to give way and what at first was a small crack became a rather large one. The ground sank possibly over 20 feet.

There were approximately 250 people who lived in the area that had no home to return to.

The small crack surfaced back in 1994 in the town of Mamit which  is located in the mountain region of northeastern Mizoram State.

The crack grew to a dangerous size this year and authorities saw the need to move out 61 families or more.

It’s good they evacuated them since the ground continued to expand until it fell in. The depth was over 20 feet.

The weakened condition of the ground was the result of heavy June rains.

Residents of the dwelling are living in schools, community centers and village offices until they can be moved back into homes.

There is a non profit group already planning on putting up new houses for them in approximately 2 weeks.

As we pray for rain, it seems so much of the world is receiving an abundance of it causing so much havoc on their lives. It doesn’t make since that we are loosing our trees and garden life for lack of rain while other people are loosing their lives and homes due to too much rain.
