It’s amazing there weren’t more deaths and serious injuries with there being 60 people traveling on the bus.
All passengers were once a part of the soldiers civil patrol. They were to trained to battle the left wing insurgents during Guatemala’s 190-1996 inside struggle.
Rural area communities supplied many of the members of the patrols. People were made to sign up and go to battle. Veterans of the civil patrols have pushed for benefits for their time served.
The project they were working on for the government was one way the government is trying to make jobs available for ex-soldiers..
