There were thousands of people attending the concert as the winds started howling and rain poured from the skies sending them searching for shelter Saturday evening at approximately 6pm. They feared that a tornado could be about to hit also causing a lot of panic among the fans.
The Billy Currington band out of Nashville was performing when the storm hit and the stage fell killing one person, not a member of the band. There was a member who was trapped beneath the stage. When he was pulled out he had a broken arm
When Larry Werner received the message of the approaching storm, he quickly informed the performers.
There wasn’t enough time before the storm hit. The message had come only minutes before the storm arrived.
Kevin Costner, a well known actor and also in the band, Modern West, was the next to perform on stage just barely missed being injured. He and his bands manager, Nick Meinama, were both stuck beneath the collapsed stage.
“He was unhurt. I was unhurt. We wiggled our way out,” Meinama told CTV News Sunday. “We found that our road manager and guitar player had been hurt, but the ambulance and the paramedics were here instantly to take them to the hospital.”
Both Costner and Meinama have been released from the hospital and are returning to the US.
“I can’t describe the sky — it was brown and purple and green,” Hooper said on CFCW. “The massive wind blew me backwards.” Hooper is a CFCW radio announcer and was also on the stage when the storm hit.
Rain fell in buckets for close to an hour as the rescue workers helped the injured and searched for missing persons. There were approximately 75 people hurt in the incident.
The storm blew musical instruments, seats and other things were flying around.
There isn’t any answers yet as to why the stage collapsed.
The rest of the concert was cancelled. It was suppose to run through Sunday.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the families, fans and friends impacted by this incident,” producer Werner said in a statement.
