Snowstorm Hits Northeast USA

With Christmas approaching just next month, people residing in Northeastern region of USA might not be enjoying this season festive. Blanketed with deep snow, several states of the region are experiencing their first major snowstorm of this winter.

Extreme piling of snow is attributed to what is known as the “lake effect snow’. This phenomenon occurs when cold air moves over relatively warm and moist air, causing water vapour to be deposited as snow on the lee of lakes. When this happens across mountains or hills, it could result in intense snowfall, causing ‘snow belts’. Currently, southeastern states affected by lake effect snow include Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. While, West Leyden and New York State had snow coming to as high as of 78 cm (28 inches). Forecasters are expecting this climate to last for another few days, due to another surge of cold air from Arctic.
