
As of now, there are 80 people hurt and 21 have perished. There are another 40 being searched for.
Heavy equipment has been brought it to help them dig faster through the muck as they search for possible survivors. Also special dogs are being used to try and look for people that are buried.
The punishing rains that induced the mudslides also resulted in autos, houses and other building being washed away and closing down roadways.
It is estimated that by the time it is all over, there could be a tolal of 50 people that have will have perished.
With the roads being blocked by mud, it has hampered getting survivors out of the area. They have brought in helicopters to transport people from roof tops and to bring in supplies.
In just a few hours, ten inches of rain fell on the Sicily on the northeastern side. It was early, the sun has still not risen as the rain fell causing many areas to flood.
There was not much, if any time to get out of the way of the walls of mud that came down on cars and homes.
Now they are asking why homes were built in an area that are at risk for landslides. Also because of the massive growth of buildings and the removal of trees, the land has less to hold back the mud allowing it to slide.
