Ice Storm
In December 2007, a disastrous ice storm swept the Midwest of USA. The total death toll recorded then was 22. A year has passed since the disaster, while northeast USA has been made the victim this year. Reported by the officials, there are at least 4 killed, with another millions living without electricity supply. State of emergency has since been declared over states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Tork State and Maine, with 1.5 million homes without electricity. State of New Hampshire is thus far the worst, with over 300,000 homes affected.
An ice storm occurs due to a phenomenon known as supercooled raindrops; whereby raindrops stay as liquid even below zero degree Celsius. When this raindrops eventually hit cold surfaces, they freeze and form layer of ice. This phenomenon is considered a hazard to road users, as it can turned into lethal sheets of smooth, thick ice.
Though ice storm is a common sight in USA during the winter months, however, this one is the most severe over a decade.
