    Fiji Islands Hit by Cyclone Tomas

    Tomas, a category 4 tropical cyclone hit Fiji’s islands in the north area on Monday in the late hours of the day. Winds gusted at 175 kph with heavy rainfall leaving a stream of damage across the islands. It has now been declared a disaster state.

    A storm of this category is considered the 2nd most damaging storm when rated on a 5 point scale.

    There were about 17,000 people who had to seek help from temporary shelters.

    The main island Viti Levu, which the capital, Suva is located, didn’t get hit as hard as the rest of the islands.

    The second to the largest island, Vanua Levu, has reported that they  experienced considerable damage from the storm.

    At this time, there is a count of 50 homes that have been demolished. It is difficult to access the total damage from the storm in the outer areas and on the smaller islands due to no communication at this time.

    Both electricity and phone communication has been loss in many areas of Vanua Levu. There is a lack of water and sewage services also.

    The northern islands of Cikobia and Qelebu have been cut off from the main islands since the storm went through on Monday.
