40 Die In Explosion On Final Day of Pligrimage

Karbala, a city on the southern side of Baghdad, is a holy city where the Shiites travel to mourn the death of Imam Hussein during this time every year.

The road was full of pilgrims trying to make their way to Karbala by Friday. It is a day of a big religious observance. It is the last day of the 40 days that pilgrims travel to the holy city.

An explosion went off just a little after noon.  A car was blown up on the eastern side of  Karbala. It was placed in one of the main entrances to Karbala which only has 3 main ways into the city.

When the bomb went off, many people began running down the road scared and they unknowingly ran right towards another car that also exploded.
There were at least 154 people injured in the explosions and another 40 or more perished.

This is the third occurence of this type this week. All have hit the areas that the Shiites travel on their pilgrimage to Karbala.

At this time, no one has claimed to be responsible for the attacks.
