At this time, there are 95 people known to have perished in Rio de Janeiro  due to flooding  waters. The floods are a result of heaviest rainfall the area has seen in decades. Landslides have also been a hazard from the falling rain.

The area has been declared a state of emergency and it is feared that the number of deaths will be much higher due to many people are  missing.

There were at the least 33 people that perished in Rio de Janerio during a 24 hour time period in which eleven inches of rain fell. In a city next to Rio de Janerio, Niteroi, another 33 died.

Rio has many of what they call shanty towns built on the sides of the hills. Due to mudslides, many of these have been buried.

The hillsides are being searched by rescue teams trying to find as many people as they can. Many are buried beneath the mud.

At this time, the rain continues to fall. The President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has asked people to please move away from their dwellings to a safer location if there is fear of potential flooding.

If there is no fear of a flood then they are being asked to remain in their homes and not to travel at this time.
