It has been only 24 hours since the city has received the highest rain fall it has ever seen in the 20 years, and already high tides have hit the city of Venice submerging it again.
Everyone in the city was warned about the “Acqua Alta” or the high waters, which has reached a height of 156 cms. By noon time more than 99% of the city was submerged.
This is the fourth highest tide the city has ever received. The worst was recorded during the floods of November 1966 when water level rose to 176 cms and claimed many lives.
The recent high tides have been caused by low pressure which has been sitting in the eastern Mediterranean over the last few days.
Further threat of floods has been reduced as the winds are expected to shift their course and the low pressure will settle down.
