    Death toll escalate in China mine explosion

    China has been known to have the deadliest mining industry in the world. A year ago, the total death toll reported was 3,200. The beginning of this year, at least 73 miners have been killed in a mine explosion in Gujian city, in northern Chinese province of Shanxi.

    At the time of the explosion, nearly 400 men were working in the coal mine. Majority of them were able to escape, however, a dozens of miners were trapped. Rescue work is still ongoing.

    Some 113 miners have been evacuated to the hospital, with 21 of them in critical condition. Doctors responded that most workers suffered from carbon monoxide intoxication. Carbon monoxide is an odourless and colourless gas, which is potentially fatal.
