80 people are being treated at area hospitals, 52 have been confirmed dead and another 38 have yet to be found.
Rescue operations have been going on constantly trying to find the missing people. Over 700 people working with the rescue operations are searching the many tunnels beneath the ground in hopes of find them.
The search is planned at this time to end within the next 24 hour period.
On the outside, amongst people waiting for loved ones to be found, there is an optimistic hope being displayed by the Russian officials. In the areas away from public eye, the optimism isn’t so verbal. Some officials speaking anonymously speculate that the chances of finding survivors in the underground tunnels are not likely. Would be a miracle if any have survived.
One always has hope, that is what keeps the searchers looking.
The mine, located in Mezhdureckensk a town in the western part of Siberia experienced an explosion caused by gas around 8:55pm Saturday. There were 359 workers at the Raspadskaya mine at the time and about 300 managed to escape.
When 50 rescue workers were attempting to enter the mine to help get out the remaining workers, there was another explosion. This second blast resulted in more deaths and damage to the mine. The second blast happened about 4 and a half hours after the first.
Now there are dozens of mine workers and rescue members unable to get out of the mine. There is also no communication with the trapped workers.
The mine is one of the biggest in Russia. There are dozens of tunnels beneath the ground. The length of the tunnels cover an area of 200 miles.
The funerals have begun with the first six happening on Tuesday. There were 5 of the miners buried in the town of Mezhdurechensk. The town where the mine is located. One other was laid to rest in Tashtagol which is also located in the Kemerovo area.
