At least 100 people have perished in the western part of Indonesia after an earthquake registering at a magitude of 7.6 hit the area on Wednesday.

The quake caused landslides, cut off roads and power lines were down.

There is a concern that possibly 1000′s of citizens could be beneath the debris of houses and other buildings that fell as a result of the quake. A hospital also went down in Padang the capital of the Western Sumatra state.

It is estimated that anywhere from one hundred to two hundred citizens have perished in Padang.

People are without electricity and places to stay. They will be trying to survive out of doors over night in the darkness of the area.

Much help is needed to start cleaning up the debris. The miliatay  and Health Ministry members are there helping, but sturdy equipment is needed to move the debris to  find people who could still be pinned in the debris.

Telephones are also down keeping people  from calling for help or being able to evaluate the amount of destruction that has occured.

Officials of Indonesia have stated that it is the largest earthquake  that Indonesia has felt in many years and may be more devasting then the one in 2006.

The area is mostly country with  thick tropical woods.

Heavy rainfall is making the rescue efforts more difficult.
