In August 2009, 20 inmates were killed and 25 injured in similar clashes at the same penitentiary. The Durango prison is described by officials as a “time-bomb” waiting to explode.
It took 40 minutes for the protection officers to quell the conflicts, reportedly between members of the rival Gulf and Sinaloa drug cartels using makeshift weapons but none firearms. The prison was framed via army troops and police, as dozens of cousins of the prisoners gathered outside the facility nervously waiting for news of their loved ones. Durango and its neighboring states of Sinaloa and Chihuahua earn up a region of Mexico dubbed “The Golden Triangle” because of the size of marijuana, opium and heroin production behaved there.
