Conflict between the Sri Lankan army and Tamil Tigers has lasted for the past 25 years, taking away lives of nearly 70,000. Five more people would be added to the total death toll following a recent suicide bombing of a security checkpoint near a market in Wattala, a suburb of Colombo. The five killed were members of the paramilitary civil defence force. Another four were injured in the attack.

Sri Lankan army has suspected the attack to be associated with Tamil Tiger rebels. They believe that the attack could be traced back to a heavy fighting between the rebels and army in north of Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan navy provided further evidence to support this opinion. A boat that was believed to be carrying ammunitions to the attackers was sunk off along the coast in north of Sri Lanka. Four rebels were killed in the event. The suicide attack took place hours after the boat was sunk, leading officials to suspect the possibility of Tamil Tigers attack.
