There were at least 13 people who died in the battles between the soldiers in Malakal which is located in the southern parts of Sudan.

On Thursday, conflicts broke out between the troops from the northern part of Sudan and the people who favor staying in the south. Conflicts between the two sides are not uncommon in Malakal.

The battles are happening as the Southern Sudan is waiting for the final approval that it will be an independent nation.

The temporary results of a vote resulted in 99% of the voters wanting to secede from the northern parts of Sudan.

On July 9th 2011, the southern part of Sudan is going to become the newest nation in the world.

Most of the victims seen in hospitals have been residents who were in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were caught in the crossfire of mortars and heavy weapons.

There are at least 13 who have died, 2 which are children but it is feared there are more dead in the areas where the battle was the strongest.

The battle started with people from the south who had joined the northern army and not wanting to move to the north. They fear once in the north they will loose all their rights.

There was also a United Nations driver who was killed in the gunfire.

The Southern Sudan army stayed out of the conflict.
