
Drought In Australia
Murray River has always been the source of water supply for Adelaide, Australia’s fifth-largest city. However, this might not be the case without the blessing of sufficient rainfall to replenish its water supply. Recent drought, deemed as the worst drought in a century, has led to a sharp reduction of water flowing into Murray River. Farmers could expect to harvest fewer crops in this period, particularly from the affected Murray Darling Basin, which accounts for 40% of the country’s fruits, vegetables, and grains.
Karlene Maywald, the state’s water security minister, announced that the country has allocated part of its budget, nearly tens of millions of dollars, on 61 billion gallons (231 gigaliters) of water. This amount of water was purchased to serve as an emergency source, in an event that this drought might continue through the coming years 2009-10.
