Dozens of pilgrims were wounded and 64 killed in the stampede which was started by a road accident.
As the pilgrims were making their way back from the Hindu Shrine of Sabarimala which is located in a very thick forest it happened. A jeep with pilgrims on it was drove into the crowd of people coming back from the shrine. This started a scare.
Another story is that the jeep would not start and pilgrims were trying to move it but it turned over.
Which ever story is the right one, the end result was a large number of pilgrims being crushed and others falling down. The people grew terrified and the stampede began.
It’s very possible there could be more dead then known at this time.
The incident occurred in Pulmedu which is located close by the town of Vandiperiyar in the Idukki district.
On Friday, there were hundreds of thousands of pilgrims that had made their way to the shrine. It was the last day of the festival.
