
The attack was carried out by two planes, but was eventually shot down. One of the plane hit offices along the Inland Revenue, which resulted in two casualties. The other plane managed to travel further, however, was shot down near the city’s airport that was closed.
This attack has shaken the Sri Lanka’s government. It was previously thought that the rebels have been driven away from all their hideouts, and the remaining forces based in northern Sri Lanka jungle were insignificant. However, the recent attack proved otherwise.
A pro-rebel website, TamilNet, said the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), had carried out the attack.
