Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union was not satisfied with the salary increment requirements, and declare 48-hour strike start from the 9 June – 7 o’clock in the evening (at their local time). It is estimated the strike will lead to full paralysis of London Underground, where millions of passengers are affected, and cause the loss of 100 million pounds.

Besides, the strike will spoil the reputation of London to visitors and tourists that the London transport system is unreliable. London mayor Boris Johnson said, the city government will make every effort to recover the smooth flow of traffic in London. The light rail services in London are not affected, the city government will deploy 100 buses to provide shipping services back and forth the River Thames with free of charge. Other action taken included increases of taxi in the main station, provide more parking spaces for bicycle and allow the use of subway cards in train.

RMT Union demands for increases of 5% for their pay. However, MTR Board only proposed a 4-year contract, where 1.5 percent increment of pay for first year, and afterward 0.5 percent according to the inflation rate; or signed contracts for 2 years, 1 percent increment of pay this year, and start from next year is 0.5 percent, according to the inflation rate.

Johnson criticized the RMT strike is an inexcusable decision, and stressed that “the strike will not be helpful for their request in any way.”
