It has been 3 days since the huge earthquake accompanied by a tsunami wounded the country so badly that the prime minister depicted it as Japan’s worst crisis since World War 2.
It is estimated that the number of individuals who died on Friday could pass 10,000. There were entire villages and towns completely destroyed by the massive wall of water racing through them. What it left was devastation and death.
A concern of explosions happening at a nuclear plant. Workers worked as quickly as they could to try and cool the reactors. There were two that were wrecked when workers started pouring in sea water to try keep them cool. There was a warning issued of possibly another explosion, but there was no concern of it being a health concern.
The survivors were now with out homes to return to and facing freezing temperatures.
The tsunami hit the northeastern coastline with a powerful vehemence. Hundreds of miles along the coast was beaten up and destroyed by the tsunami. Rescue teams removed many individuals that had died from mud covered shambles of homes. There were automobiles, uprooted trees tore out of the ground and batches of entangled electrical wires all mixed in the mud.
One of the three areas hit the worst was Miyagi. There it was reported by the police chief that over 10,000 individuals had died.The numbers was an estimate as the number confirmed dead at this time is 400. Miyagi has 2.3 million people living there.
Authorities have stated that over 1800 individuals have been confirmed to have died. 200 of those individuals were found lying along the coast on Sunday. There are still over 1400 people that haven’t been located and another 1900 that were wounded.
There are hundreds of thousands of people who survived gathered in emergency areas. They are hungry, have no electrical power, no help and no water.
Over 1.4 million homes are without water and 1.9 million have had no power since the quake.
The government has sent in twice the number of service members to help in aiding 100,000 survivors. They have sent in 120,000 blankets, 120,000 containers of bottled water and 29,000 gallons of gasoline. They have also sent food to the victims.
As electricity is restored, it will be rationed out to areas at different times. There will continue to be blackouts as other areas are receiving power.
“This is Japan’s most severe crisis since the war ended 65 years ago,” said Prime Minister Naoto Kan .

There have been at least 50 countries that have released tsunami alerts due to the earthquake.
Across the area there were walls of water forcing their way over rice fields, swallowing up towns, and pulling dwellings out into highways. Cars and boats were swept away and thrown around like they were mere toys.
There were automobiles on bridges that plunged into the raging waters below. Boats were being tossed around into the bridges and other boats.
Fires were started at 80 or more places.
The death toll will continue to rise. Many are missing and the exact numbers at this time are unknown.
A nuclear plant in the area of the quake and has been vacated and shut down the best they could. At this time there is no problem with it. They are only taking precautions.
The starting point of the quake was found to be off the shore line about 231 miles from Tokyo.
After shocks continue to strike fear into the people living there. At this time there have been over 30 of them. The worst was a 7.1.
There were close to 4 million dwelling having no electrical power in Tokyo and the outskirt areas at the time of this report.
The size of this earthquake was bigger then anyone ever expected to hit Japan.
Due to the size, tsunami warnings had to be sent out to other coastal areas that were near where the quake began.
Philippines was suppose to be hit in the early morning hours. Alerts had been sent to prepare them.
Other nations alerted were Russia, Indonesia, Central America, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Hawaii. Sirens were set off in Hawaii in the early morning hours. Alerts have also been issued for the western coasts of the US and Canada.
This earthquake is the 5th most powerful quake to hit since 1900 and the strongest one since then for Japan.

They hit a rock and the boat cracked Passengers were frightened and ran to the side of the boat that was closest to the shoreline. The boat broke up into pieces and the passengers ended up in the water.
The water was rough. Only one person made to the beach while others tried grabbing onto rocks or anything they could.
One person saw 7 people screaming from a rock for help. No one could approach them due to the rough water. Eventually they all ended up in the water. One survived while the others drowned.
People living on Christmas Island could hear the screams of the passengers.Residents jumped to try and help. Many threw in life jackets or anything that would float to the people who were struggling in the water. They had been in the water for about an hour.
Officials also came to the rescue finding the boat in pieces.
There were bodies all over the water. Women, babies and children that had drowned.
It looked like the set of a horror movie. So many dead. It was a terrifying site.
Only one person made it to land from the boat. 41 others were rescued and 27 died.
They were possibly on their way to Christmas Island where Australia has an asylum for people from other countries seeking asylum. It is an immigration detention center.
There are possibly 30 people having their wounds tended to. Three of them have serious wounds.

It is very possible that the death tolls could go higher as more victims are found.
Mount Merapi is one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes.
The volcano spit out hot ash and lava which took the lives of possibly over 33 people.
The volcano erupted again this past Monday once again sending out it’s deadly ash and lava.
People living on the sides of the volcano had to flee for their lives once again.
The earthquake that preceded the volcano eruption last week triggered a deadly tsunami.
Pictures taken from the air are showing large areas of land under water and homes that are in bits and pieces from the tsunami’s wave.
The tsunami swept away entire villages leaving a wake of destruction and numerous deaths.
Rescue operations are now underway. The bad weather and roughness of the sea prevented any earlier rescue relief from getting to the people.
Much needed aide and supplies has been flown in to help the residents.

It is possible that after the tsunami was started that many of the still missing people could have ran for higher ground and will be found at a later time.
A witness in West Sumatra is reported as stating that they saw a wave nearly 20 feet in height and others are saying there were 10 foot waves.
A village of about 200 residents has been washed away according to Satoko the head of the Mentawai Islands parliament. Only about 40 residents have been located.
A tourist boat with 8 to 10 Australian tourists on board was a first missing but has now been found. All the Australian tourist are said to be alright.
Possibly the island that took the worst hit was the Mentawai Islands. It is well known for surfing.
Information is only coming in a bit at a time as the area hit was the remote areas of Indonesia and mainly islands.
The quake happened at 9:42pm on Monday night.

The area has been declared a “state of catastrophe” by the president Michelle Backelet.
The quake set off many tsumami alerts in areas of the Pacific Ocean.
This quake is the highest magnitude to hit Chili in 50 years.
In Santago, at least 13 people died and many buildings fell down. A 2 level parking garage fell flat to the ground smashing many cars parked in it.
A fire started at a chemical plant on the outer parts of Santago causing many people to leave their homes.
In Maule, 34 people have perished. There are many deaths being reported in the areas of O’Higgins in Biobio, Araucania and also in Valparaiso.
The newly elected president of Chili, Sebastian Pinera, figures the total of people who have perished to be 122. The number could go up.
At this point, Parral seems to have been hit the hardest.They are the closest to the epicenter.
