There were jobs advertised to apply for in Bareilly, a town located approximately 115 miles on the southwestern side of Lucknow. Lucknow is the capital of Uttar Pradesh state.

There were 461 positions open that 200,000 people turned out to apply for. The jobs were for the Indian paramilitary force.

The amount of people applying for the job out numbered any thing that was expected which resulted in the Indo-Tibetan Border Force to delay the enlisting of people until a later date on Tuesday.

The people wanting the job were rather upset by the postponing of applying for the positions.

People were upset and anger grew out of control. There were 5 homes set on fire along with a gas station while they protested in the street.

Eventually the job seekers got onto trains to return to their homes. There were too many people for the trains to handle. Ones that could not squeeze onto the train made their ways up onto the roofs.

As the trains were traveling along, they came to a bridge that the train passed under, there were 14 that died instantly when they were hit by the bridge and were knocked off onto the ground. 4 others later died in the hospital and 9 others remained in the hospital.

People riding on the outer parts of trains is not an uncommon sight  in India as seen in the picture. This is a picture of another train ride by other individuals to show how trains travel in India.
