
The over loaded ferry was excessively damaged and as of now, it is known that 27 died. Their bodies have been found, 15 were women. There are many still missing.
The boat was carrying approximately 100 people across the river. Some were on top while others were inside the ferry when it capsized. It was a double decker.
Passengers on top of the ferry were more likely to have survived. Many jumped off into the water and ones that could swim, swam to the shoreline.
Passengers inside the ferry were trapped and unable to get out and off the sinking boat. Many inside the boat were women and children.
Rescue efforts are under way to try and find all the missing passengers. Families await on the shoreline for news of their loved ones.
Ferry accidents are common in Bangladesh. There are hundreds yearly. The rules aren’t obeyed, the boats are over loaded. There have been approximately 4000 deaths estimated because of ferry accidents since 1977.
