On Wednesday, during the changing of the shift workers at a Colombia mine, there was an explosion.

As of Friday, 18 people have perished due to the blast.

It happened about 11.45 ET. The San Fernando mine is located in the north western part of Colombia, in the city of Amaga.

At this time there are still 53 miners that are still unable to be located. Another one is being treated for burns.

The funeral for the first of the miners was on Friday.

People are loosing hope as the hours pass and no sign of miners being brought up alive out of the mine.

One lady, Dora Sanchez mentioned to a TV station how her husband had not wanted to go to his job that day.

“We felt a very strong explosion,” miner Edgar Herrera told Caracol. “It left us … stunned, deaf.”

Because the blast happened during a time of a shift change, there were more workers around the mine they there is at other times.

The authorities have had to stop looking for survivors for now due to a build up of gas. To keep looking could put others lives at risk.

    Gulf Oil Spill Continues

How long we ask is this going to go on? There is no end in sight.

It has now been 46 days since the start of one of the worlds worst natural disasters. The oil continues to spill out into the Gulf.

BP now has a plan to siphon the oil from the well and bring it to the top of the Gulf waters. Then they will try to get it to flow onto another drill ship called Discover Enterprise.

They already started doing this on Friday. BP is to shut 4 of the vents on the top of the cap which is allowing the oil to leak out into the Gulf. They are hoping if they close off these 4 vents that the flow will be cut back.

If the procedure is going to be successful or not was to be determined later on Friday.

President Obama once again visited the Gulf Coast on Friday to view the extinct of the damage. It has been said the he was “furious at this entire situation.”

Obama didn’t talk a lot about the efforts to cap off the well, but he did relay to the news that, “it does appear that the cap — at least for now — is holding.” He also said that it is, “way too early to be optimistic.”  We could possible know something in the next 24 to 48 hours according to Obama on Friday. That means we could possibly be hearing good news anytime, or I could have missed the announcement.

I do hope we hear that the oil is now being contained and will be capped.

Our wildlife have suffered and our beaches have balls of tar the size of silver dollars on them in Pensacola, Florida.

The oil has already become a threat to Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Florida is next.

It was possible that the oil will reach Destin Florida by Saturday afternoon.

On Friday, at about 1:30 in the morning in India, two railroad trains traveling parallel to one another, were in a collision with each other.

One of the trains, the passenger one, derailed and fell into the path of the on coming freight carrier. The result was the oncoming freight train crashed into the 13 passenger train cars sitting in its direct path.

There were 73 people who perished in the wreckage and another 115 wounded.

As evening approaches, there becomes more doubt that anymore people are alive in the wreckage.

Some are saying an explosive may have gone off to cause the rails to be be unsecured sending the train off the tracks. Others feel a section of the track, the fish plates, could have been taken out by someone.

There are leads going to the Maoist guerrillas in the area. Posters have been placed around proclaiming they did it. The Maoist are India’s most homeland threat to security in the country.

There is an investigation underway to find out the cause but the possibility of it being cause by the Maoist can not be eliminated.

Over Crowed Ferry Flips Over on the Amazon River

    Posted by barb On May - 27 - 2010

On Wednesday, a ferry on the Amazon River flipped over. According to riders that survived the accident, the ferry was horribly over crowed.

The amount of people the ship is suppose to carry is 160. At the time of the article being written, there were 171 people that had been rescued. Another 12 already found to have perished in the accident.

It is unknown how many people were actually on board the boat. The official record of who was to be on the boat at that time were 146 passengers and 6 crew.

It is possible there could be more people alive in a bubble of air entrapped in side the flipped boat.  There is hope for more survivors.

The boat had made many stops along the way at settlements where more people, freight and animals were put on the boat.

The  boat commenced it’s voyage on Tuesday evening. As it continued to stop and get more freight on board, it is believed that the boat was over weight and not stable. Therefore causing it to flip over.

Some survivors feel they only survived because they kept close to the railings as to not be trapped inside where there were people so squished in you couldn’t hardly move.

The coast guard got an alarm on Wednesday morning at 2:40am. The alarm was for a boat sinking because it was over loaded.

Rescue attempts continued Thursday morning in Peru searching in hope of more survivors.
