Flood Waters Sweep Through Camping Areas

    Posted by barb On June - 13 - 2010

    Arkansas Flooding
    Arkansas Flooding
In Arkansas, people who were enjoying the out do doors, were hit with heavy rainfall on Friday with rivers rising almost 8ft an hour.

The rising rivers sent a wall of water tearing through the campgrounds as many were still in their beds sleeping.

Some people survived by climbing trees and holding onto cars. The flood waters tore trees out of the ground and even the asphalt was ripped off the roads.

At this time there are at least 18 confirmed dead. 6 of the dead are children. There are still over 20 people missing from the campgrounds.

The debris from the once active campgrounds now lies along the sides of the swollen rivers. Tents, cabins, supplies all line the banks.

At this time, there has  been dozens of people rescued.

The search goes on for possibly more people trapped and in need of help.

They are searching the campgrounds that run along the Little Missouri and the Caddo rivers in Ouchita Mountains.

There could have 300 or more people camping in those areas at the time of the floods.

It’s not certain how many were camping, so they really have no idea the actual number of people that are missing.

Albert Pike Recreation Area also hit by flood waters had it’s log of campers washed away. The campgrounds were full of families. There were many questions being asked on Friday about possibly 73 campers who could still be missing.

The area hit by the floods is a mixture of campgrounds, hunting areas and peoples homes.

Some who are still missing could be under rocks or debris. If they are trapped beneath the water, they may not be found for awhile yet.

They will possibly keep the search and rescue mission going for a bit longer.
