
Protesters in Kashmir
On Monday, Sept 13th, there was
protest that spanned a wide area. During the protest, 18 people were killed and another 80 injured. Some were severely injured.
The protesters ignored a curfew to show a protest towards India and against a minister in Florida who had planned on burning the Quran. The burning was canceled.
The angry protesters set fire to 2 police cars, two different Christian missionary schools and a great deal of official government buildings. The protesters were majority young people.
The deaths on Monday were the most in any one day tally in a mostly Muslim Kashmir Valley since June 11th. The over all deaths have totaled 89 with Mondays incident.
Many others were injured during the assault and had to be treated in the Kashmir hospitals. The hospitals have seen an increase in need of medical assistance through all of this unrest.
Stones have been thrown at the Indian Security forces by the protesters in many of the townships throughout Kashmir. There have been assaults from Tangmarg to the Budgan area and south to Anantnag.
The local government is asking people to settle down and will not let the Iranian Press TV channel broadcast. They are the ones who let it be know about the planned burning of the Quran.
“Quit Kashmir” is a campaign that was started by separatist groups. The demonstrators are a part of this campaign. They are protesting against India ruling in Kashmir.
Kashmir is majorly Muslim. It is said to be both a part of Pakistan and India. India has sent thousands of troops into Kashmir. They are suppose to stop what the Indian leaders think was an insurgency that is backed by the Pakistan’s. This was suppose to have started back in the late part of the 1980′s.
India has stated that the insurgency has taken over 43,000 lives in Kashmir. The Insurgency is no longer a strong force but India has kept troops there.
