The Hungry in Africa

Drought in Africa
Drought in Africa
The drought has caused more then just crops to die. Thousands of livestock and other animals have died from lack of water and food.

The last drought that was as bad as this one was 10 years ago.

Elderly people and infants are the most at risk. The elderly people are given food and water after everyone else has been cared for. They are being given so  little. The young children are getting sick from lack of proper nourishment and water. Diarrhea is a risk.

There are 7 countries suffering from the drought and it is estimated that 23 million people are suffering or going to suffer from it’s ill effects.

Changes in the climate and the numbers of people now dwelling in the countries is part of the problem. There have been 4 years of harvest that haven’t been so good. Trying to stock up to prepare for times like this has been impossible.

There is fear that if it does start to rain next month, that it could be yet another bad turn for the countries. El Nino could play a part in the climate changes and cause torrential rainfall and not the slow steady rains that is mostly needed.

The govenment is trying to help it’s people. They feel they have done all they can do. Even as bad as it seems, there are figured to be less people in need of help then there was in 2008.

People Perish wanting flour
People Perish wanting flour
The people of Karachi in Pakistan are hungry as many are in other areas of Pakistan. It has been calculated that 24 percent of the people living in Pakistan are not getting enough to eat and that 38 percent of the young ones are too lean.

Chaudhry Iftikhar wanted to help. He set up a site in Karachi to give flour to the people. He neglected to file the proper papers and get permission to do this. He is being held for his violation.

During the flour distribution, which took place on September 14th, 2009, the people rushed and pushed so hard to get their portion of the flour, that 18 people have now perished as a result of it. There were an additional 12  injured in the act. Two  young children died in the accident.

Hundreds of people were awaiting the flour. Many of the people are currently homeless due to the battles going on in their tribes areas.

It is so sad that people are that hungry in our world where so much is wasted.

The battle was between the ethnical Pokot cattle thieves and the Samburu herdsmen. The cattle thieves attacked an area where the herdsmen had their cattle grazing in the pastures.

Amongst the people who died were adult females and children. There were 21 Samburu inhabitants and 8 of the rustlers that died in the battle.

10 Million in Kenya Facing Starvation

Posted by barb On August - 11 - 2009

Cattle being relocated
Cattle being relocated
A drought, lack of electricity, the after math of the election all are sending Kenyans searching for something better.

The drought has caused a huge relocation of cattle out of the North parts of Kenya as the farmers are searching for water spots for them. They have migrated into the Borena region in Ethiopia.

This is the first time in 10 years that such a movement has taken place. Every year cattle drives do take place as farmers lead their cattle over the border, but this year is much worse.

The Government has tried to help out the situation by permitting nontaxable corn to be brought into the country and help with fertilizers but it hasn’t helped enough.

The cattle being moved amounts to over 200,000 heads.

The problem with such cattle drives as this is the possibility of spreading  diseases which would hurt the market for cattle exporting in Ethiopia.

Along with the crops and no water for cattle is the ability to make hydro-electricity. Electric is being rationed at this time.

Last January, Mwai Kibaki, the president remarked that 10 million Kenyans are facing starvation. 1000′s of farmers have left their farms.

Tibet to experience climatic challenge

Posted by james87 On May - 6 - 2009

Desertification in parts of China
Desertification in parts of China
Weather experts have reported a surge in the average temperature of Tibet, which is causing an enormous climatic challenge to the region. The effect of such weather condition could bring forth short-term flooding, while putting the region in severe drought in the long-run. This could be explained with the melting of glaciers at an accelerated rate, leading to water gushing in into lakes and rivers. However, the water could deplete equally fast with the rising temperature.

The government is now proritising the safety of millions who are residing in the region, while stressing the need for immediate contingency plans to tackle such climatic condition.

Desertification now roams part of China and has already caused many to be in destitution. It is a sure challenge for the government to take necessary measures to counter such weather effects.
