Following the collapse of the health, sanitation and water services in Zimbabwe, there has been a rising death of cholera victims. UN and Zimbabwe’s health ministry revealed that two-thirds of the victims have died this month.

The UN recorded total death toll to be 1,564, with 29,131 suspected cases since August. On the other hand, Unicef stated the amount to be 1,174. While, figures from local health ministry on 1 December put it at 484. According to World Health Organisation, all 10 Zimbabwe’s provinces have received reports of cholera cases. Thus far, situation in suburb of Budiriro, Harare’s capital, has been the worst, followed by Beitbridge on border with South Africa. South Africa alone has recorded a total of 1,279 cases and 12 deaths.

Shortages of medical aids and food supply further accelerate the dire state. Many clinics and hospitals have ceased operations, leaving the population without proper treatments. Besides this, demand for food is yet another concern. Save the Children reported some five million people in Zimbabwe are in need of food aid.

Certainly, more aids are required for the population in Zimbabwe. The UN stressed that it could take up to six months to control the outbreak.

A recent report highlighted the overall death toll of Zimbabwe cholera epidemic to be as high as 1,111. This figure is among the 20,581 cases reported since August. Previously, Harare has been deemed as the worst affected area. As for now, a new outbreak of hundreds of cases has been reported again in Chegutu, near capital of Harare.

Amid the cholera epidemic, Aid agency Oxfam has launched a £4m ($6.2m) appeal, hoping to relieve residents of cholera disease as well as shortages of food. The country’s political instability has hindered relieve aids, while escalating further spread of cholera. If the government continues to let its health services and water sanitation to be impaired, Zimbabwe could expect to witness another round of epidemic spread, causing more people to be affect.

Cholera fight hinders by several limitations

    Posted by james87 On December - 7 - 2008

    zimbabwe cholera

Amid a drastic cholera epidemic, Zimbabwe now faces yet another problem – limitation in clean water supply. Since the dawn of cholera in August, 500 have died and many infected. Collapse of the country’s health and sanitation systems has been the main cause of the epidemic. Without proper management, water and sanitation systems soon became the source of epidemic spread.

Many areas are reported to be in extreme shortage of portable water supply; both drinking and medical use. In Mabvuku and Tafara areas, eastern of Harare, water has been cut off since April. In city center, water is only available for an hour or so each day.

According to emergency clinics, as much as 60 litres of water are required to treat a single cholera patient. They are receiving approximately 200 patients each day. Currently, water from boreholes are delivered to the clinic via trucks, however, both boreholes and trucks are short in numbers. Clinics have since implemented water restriction regime, whereby each patient would receive just half the amount of water, from 60 litres to a mere 30 litres.

If water supply is not met, cholera epidemic could worsen especially during rainy season.

Zimbabwe preparing for upcoming spike on Cholera

    Posted by james87 On December - 7 - 2008

Cholera outbreaks in Zimbabwe are not as optimistic to the UN Children Fund. Officials are expecting cholera cases to raise further, up by an estimated amount of 60,000 in the coming weeks. Death toll could reach to 2,700, commented by Roeland Monasch, Unicef chief in Harare.

Mr. Monasch projected that the actual death toll might even be higher than recorded, attributing to the fact that people in rural areas frequently just bury the dead without reporting.

The epidemic might spread further, extend uncontrollably during rainy season from December to March. To make matter worst, population in Zimbabwe is in short of food; people were reported to be in extreme hunger even for the disease-stricken. If another round of cholera was to strike, under conditions such as shortages of food and medical aids, it could no doubt lead to a far more fatal epidemic.
