AvalancheAvalanche Covers Part of Training School in Kashmir

It took approximately 6 hours to find the 17 people who had perished and another 53 soldiers that were found alive in the snow.
Even with all the snow and the rain falling, the efforts of the army, police and civilians officials were quick , efficient and well done.
The avalanche occured near the ski resort, Gulmarq. It is situated about 30 miles on the north western side of Srinagar. This is close to the Line of Control, a ceasefire area controled by the military. It is a line that separates the Himalayan area of Kashmir between India and Pakistan.
At the time of the avalanche, there were approximately 400 people in attendance at the center including 30 workers from the civilian sector. Since the avalanche only occured in one area of the school, most of the people there were not affected by it.
Snow and rain falling is known to set off avalanches and landslides in Kashmir. It results in roads being blocked and cuts off access to tourist areas.. All tourist in the area ski resort were not harmed in the avalanche.
