Egyptian soccer game turns deadly
At a soccer game in Egypt, 74 people lost their lives when fans ran onto the field after the home team won. Hundreds of other people were wounded in the stampede onto the field and the battles that followed. It is being referred to as the worst case of violence over a soccer game in Egypt and being rated as the most deadly in the entire world since a soccer clash back in 1996. It is being referred to as appearing like a war.

There were many Egyptians killed as they flooded the field in the after math of the soccer game on February 1st in Port Said, Cairo. After hearing that yet another soccer match was stopped due to the violence at Port Said, fans there set the stands on fire. In the violence there, no one was reported as being wounded as the fire personnel put out the fires before they got too big.
The police at the games had been told not to get involved in the action of the civilians. There had been another clash between police and fans back in November that resulted in the deaths of 40 people. Without the protection of the police, the riot at Port Said got very out of control. Many of the fans were crushed in the dash onto the field. Others were stabbed by rival fans carrying knives and some smothered in the crowds.

Close To 120 People Still Missing After Ferry Sinking
On Thursday, there were nearly 350 people riding on the ferry, MV Rabaul Queen when it went under. The ferry was close to 10 miles out from the coast of Cape Fortification located in Vitaz Strait when problems started to appear. 238 people have been rescued on around 10 life rafts. The people on the rafts were seen within a short time after the ferry went under. There were also many boats and helicopters that hurried to the area, but winds made the rescues difficult causing big waves. The ferry was carrying too many passengers. The ferry was licensed to only transport 310 people.
Ferry rides are the most affordable way of transportation for passengers that are traveling between the islands and the mainland. It is thought that many of the passengers on the ferry were parents with their children going to the mainland to attend schools. It is good that so many people have been rescued, but loosing even one is too many. As of now, there are still 120 people to be found.
The ferry was hit by 3 big waves as it was making it’s trip to the mainland which may have caused it to go under. There is hope that more people will be found in the warm waters. People have been known to survive for a few days. There is also hope that maybe there were not as many people on board as estimated.
