There were many Egyptians killed as they flooded the field in the after math of the soccer game on February 1st in Port Said, Cairo. After hearing that yet another soccer match was stopped due to the violence at Port Said, fans there set the stands on fire. In the violence there, no one was reported as being wounded as the fire personnel put out the fires before they got too big.

The police at the games had been told not to get involved in the action of the civilians. There had been another clash between police and fans back in November that resulted in the deaths of 40 people. Without the protection of the police, the riot at Port Said got very out of control. Many of the fans were crushed in the dash onto the field. Others were stabbed by rival fans carrying knives and some smothered in the crowds.

Close To 120 People Still Missing After Ferry Sinking

On Thursday, there were nearly 350 people riding on the ferry, MV Rabaul Queen when it went under. The ferry was close to 10 miles out from the coast of Cape Fortification located in Vitaz Strait when problems started to appear. 238 people have been rescued on around 10 life rafts. The people on the rafts were seen within a short time after the ferry went under. There were also many boats and helicopters that hurried to the area, but winds made the rescues difficult causing big waves. The ferry was carrying too many passengers. The ferry was licensed to only transport 310 people.

Ferry rides are the most affordable way of transportation for passengers that are traveling between the islands and the mainland. It is thought that many of the passengers on the ferry were parents with their children going to the mainland to attend schools. It is good that so many people have been rescued, but loosing even one is too many. As of now, there are still 120 people to be found.

The ferry was hit by 3 big waves as it was making it’s trip to the mainland which may have caused it to go under. There is hope that more people will be found in the warm waters. People have been known to survive for a few days. There is also hope that maybe there were not as many people on board as estimated.

74 Die in Cattle Raid in Southern Sudan

Women and children are amongst the dead where a group of raiders, a militia group for Unity State, killed them during a cattle raid. Southern Sudan’s governor, Nyangdeng Malek told how she had seen 74 bodies from the raid on Saturday. She also reported that there were 72 others at area hospitals recieving treatment.

The raiders were from the Unity State. A neighboring state. They had taken a great deal of cattle with them. Thousands of cows had been stolen. It is not certain if they were actually militia or possibly civilians carrying weapons. The area that was attacked by the raiders had been disarmed leaving them unable to defend themselves against the raiders.

Even though the southern part of Sudan separated from the nothern part back in July, and it was a peaceful separation, tension still is high between the two parts. It followed many years of war. Cattle are very important to the Southern Sudanese. They play a very important role in their lives. There have been many people that have perished in cattle raids in Jonglei in the past weeks. A significant reason for tension between the two areas is agreeing on how the oil wealth should be divided since the south separated.

There is concern that the storm is only going to get stronger for a few more days as it moves very slowly across the area.

Just last week, they suffered the tropical depression, Dando. Suffering from two storms so close to one another did not allow time to clean up from one storm before another moved in. Making the roadways even more dangerous. People are advised not to travel on the roads until they have been checked over.

With the lack of communication, there are people going into areas of danger unaware of the roads being washed away or still under water.
