GunmenTake Hostages at the Salahuddin Headquaters in Iraq
Men wearing military garb with bombs beneath their uniforms, invaded the Salahuddin Headquarters located in the area that Saddam Hussein use to live.
They grabbed up hostages and murdered them in an execution type way and then used the explosives in their belts to blow themselves up.
All together, there were 45 people that died in the siege.
After killing three councilmen at the headquarters, they set fire to the councilmen bodies. There was an older council man and Mohammed al-Asi the states media adviser that were killed. The older man was a politician who was the head of the councils committee on religious affairs.
Mohammed took a hard stand against the al-Qaida located in Iraq. Some think this could be the real cause behind the assault.
The elderly man, was pretty much not to blame for anything. “He was just an old man — he did nothing,” al-Asi said in an interview. He was very upset, “Why did they shoot him and set fire to his poor body?”
There were also journalist among the hostages that were killed.
It all began around 1pm on Tuesday. It is known that the provincial council has a meeting there on Tuesdays. Today they ended their meeting early and called it a day or there could have been many more deaths as many had left already.
Men with guns started the whole thing by opening fire in a reception room. Just shooting anywhere and anyone.
They had gotten into the building by dressing up and pretending to be military soldiers. One had a uniform of rank on. They were told that they would still have to be searched, and that is when the gunmen started shooting at the guards outside the headquarters at a security station.
They were carrying guns and grenades. There were about 8 or more men with guns who took over the headquarters on the 2nd floor. As the Iraqi security encircled the building, the gunmen tossed out grenades at them.
There were 98 people injured and 45 that died in the attack. The siege lasted over 5 hours.
It is thought that the al-Qaida in Iraq is to be blamed for the assault. It has the their markings with the suicide bombing, and the execution style murders. They were marks of an extremist group.
