    Pre-Carnival Accident Kills 17 in Brazil

    The accident occurred in a tiny Brazilian town. A live electric line came loose and fell into a group of people dancing behind the truck.

    They were following along behind the truck which was playing loud music in the main square where the wire fell.

    There were dozens of people injured , a few of the injuries were severe.

    Everything suddenly went black. Phone service was interrupted following the incident.

    It was a horrible site. People were being electrocuted by the loose wire, others on top of the truck fell to the ground. Then it went dark. There were no lights.

    The reason for the wire coming loose is not known. It’s possible that some fireworks could have been the reason. Another possibility is that a person in the area could have pulled the wire down.

    The incident is under investigation

    Street parades are common occurrences prior to a carnival. The Carnival starts on Friday.

    57 Somalis Die Fleeing War Torn Somalia

    They were only trying to flee the capital, Mogadishu. The fighting had sent many looking for more peaceful surroundings.

    One person survived the sinking of their boat. It had taken on water as it traveled across the Gulf of Aden. The gulf is one of the deadliest ways for the Somalis to try and escape the fighting in their country. The boat flipped over and all on board but one perished.

    The survivor, a 42 year old man had been fleeing with his wife and 3 children. He lost his family to the waters of the Gulf of Aden.

    Just a 4 maritime miles from the Radhom district in the province of Shabwa. It took the man 23 hours to swim the distance to the shore of Yemen.

    This adds to the tragedies suffered by the Somali people. It may be the worst accident that has taken the most lives of people trying to make their way to a better life since January of 2008.

    This year only there have been 89 people that have either drowned or are considered missing in the Gulf waters between Somalia and Yemen.

    Hundreds Still Missing After the Quake in New Zealand

    In New Zealand, rescue teams continue to search through the rubble for survivors from the earthquake that ripped through Christchurch. Some buildings crumbled to the ground while others lost large parts falling on the streets and sidewalks next to them.

    The death toll has risen to 75 now with only 55 being identified. Hundreds of people have still not been found.

    Included in the missing are 10 Japanese students that are thought to trapped beneath the debris at the King’s Education College.

    Rescue operations are going on continuously with the workers using floodlights during the night. They found a number of people trapped in buildings and pulled them out.

    There were 22 rescued from the PPG building, 2 of them suffering serious injuries. 22 others are believed to be still trapped in the debris.

    Another 8 were rescued out of the CTV building.

    Even with these rescues, there are yet many still missing.

    New Zealand Suffers Deadly Earthquake

    The earth shook and one resident said it was like trying to walk on jelly when he went out into the streets as the 6.3 quake ripped through Christchurch, New Zealand.

    At this time, there are 66 known to have died in the quake. It is possible that there could be many more as people search through the rubble.

    The quake hit on Tuesday afternoon right before 1pm. That is 7pm on Monday EST. Close to 15 minutes after the quake shook the area, an after shock of 5.6 struck. Yet another after shock of 5.5 hit close to 3pm local time.

    The deadly earthquake took out buildings, some fell on to buses traveling on the street, roads broke up and churches were damaged.

    There were people on two of the buses that were smashed by falling debris of buildings.

    One witness described the windows bursting out, and bricks coming down as people were screaming.

    The airport has been closed down to out going and incoming flights in Christchurch.

    The hospital there is being evacuated.

    The phone lines are down and water mains are spilling water into the streets.

    The Christchurch’s 106 year old Cathedral received heavy damage. The tower collapsed and possibly half of the church itself collapsed.

    People were trying to get out of the area as quickly as they could. Ones that were able to were trying to reach higher ground as fears of a tsunami set in.

    Getting out of the area wasn’t easy as the roadways were buckled and full of debris from buildings.

    Many were just getting things together after experiencing the 7.1 quake in September.

    Two churches were still being repaired from the previous quake.

    It’s a real nightmare for everyone.

    A home for children that was established in 1950 caught fire in Haapsalu a town on the western side of Estonian.

    There were 9 adults and 37 children inside the building when the fire started. Most of the children were sleeping as it was nap time for them.

    The one level wooden structure was engulfed in flames.The fire spread quickly throughout the home. It is not know what caused the fire yet.

    The orphanage is set up to help handicap children. Most of the children who resided there used wheelchairs. This made it difficult for them to get out of their beds and into the chairs alone to escape the flames.

    10 of the 37 children did not make it out alive. The ones that were rescued were taken to a close by building.

    Monday has been declared a national day of mourning for Estonia.

    The overloaded platform was busy with many patrons to the game and candy sellers.

    As a parade to start the Copa Crema Jose Luis “Puma” Carranza tournament was about to begin, the platform began to sway back and forth, then it collapsed.

    There were over 100 people wounded in the collapse of the platform. 12 of the wounded received serious injuries.

    Most of the injuries involved patrons necks and backs. There were some that had broke their ribs. A lot of the injured were treated and released to go home on their own from the accident area.

    The tournament is for the youth in Lima, Peru. The stadium was packed with visitors to watch the games.

    The accident happened on Friday. There is no report on the condition of the patrons who were seriously injured.

    In Halong Bay, there were 26 tourist on a boat along with their tour guide that sank. 20 of the tourist were foreigners. The boat went down on the north eastern side of Vietnam taking 12 lives with it. 11 were passengers and 12th victim was the tour guide.

    It was a tour boat made of wood. They were in the process of checking out the Unesco World Heritage Site located in the province of Quang Ninh when it sank.

    Not all drowned, there were 15 people that were saved. 9 of them were foreigners.

    No one knows why the boat sank. It is thought that maybe it broke without anyone realizing it.

    The boat was a typical type junk that people will go out on and spend the night on.

    Halong Bay is a very popular spot that tourist like to visit. It has many small islands and freshwater swamps.

    Some of the rescued passengers thought they had seen a plank of the boat come off of it. Then a lot of water and the boat sank.

    Crew were battling the water coming onto the boat and alerted the sleeping passengers. The whole thing happened so fast and the boat sank. The passengers and guide that drowned were all in cabins.

    It took one minute to sink according to one survivor.

    They are investigating the accident.

    In Argentina on Wednesday, during the busy afternoon rush, a train ran into the back of another train killing 4 people.

    70 more were injured in the accident when a train leaving the Retiro train station crashed into the rear of the other train.

    The accident happened close to the San Miguel train depot which is 12 miles on the western side of the Argentina capital.

    14 of the wounded were listed in critical condition.

    Rescue workers continue to look amongst the wreckage for the possibility of people being trapped inside the trains.

    The reason for the accident hasn’t yet been determined.
