Fire buring from pipeline explosion
It is a sad day for people living in the city of San Martin and surrounding area.
In the predawn hours on Sunday, an explosion of a pipe line and fire killed 27 people. 12 of the dead are children.
The fire and explosion followed by two more small blast sent many fleeing from their homes.
Pictures of San Martin and the surrounding area looked like pictures taken in a ghost town. Or out of a horror story. Not homes that people had just recently been sleeping in.
The explosion was from the pipeline. People had been trying to steal crude oil out of the pipeline and caused the explosion plus the small ones that followed.
They apparently lost control of what they doing because of the high pressure inside the pipeline.
It isn’t uncommon for people to try and steal the crude oil. It happens every year.As much as 10 percent of the crude oil is stolen yearly. Then it is illegally transported over the border and sold. There are some companies being sued and some fined due to purchasing the stolen oil.
The fire is under control now. It is still buring, but only the remains of the oil. There have been no more explosions.
The area hit by the turmoil is without water or electricity at this time.
There were 115 homes burnt, possibly more then 52 people were wounded and another 27 that perished.
President Felipe Calderon has conveyed his condolences to the households who lost loved ones. He has voiced his support for the wounded and families affected by this disaster.
The president has told of how the federal government will fully support in the investigation of finding the people who did this horrible act and make sure they are brought to trial.
